From the writings of J. B. Scalabrini one can note his conviction that the laity have a fundamental contribution to make to political life. Their participation is animated by their witnessing to a Christian vision of life and society. In particular, the work of the laity in the ministry to migrants constitutes a special field for personal encounter and witness to Christ. The constant movement of people are: a sign of and contribute to the realization of God's project for humanity; announce the Gospel; and are living instruments in the growth of unity of all people in God.
The members of SLM, received further confirmation on the role of their contribution from John Paul II: "Many of the problems which occur from human mobility cannot be resolved without the cooperation of lay people. The Church, whilst she commits herself to correspond to the pastoral needs of the migrants, she warmly exhorts all the people of God and in particular lay faithful who are sensitive to the apostolic action, so that, in the undertaking of their specific commitments, they dedicate themselves with generosity to the renewal of the world and to the concrete actualization of that which the truth, justice and love require".
The members of SLM live and nurture their faith on a daily basis by dedicating themselves to the service of migrants, according to their particular work and ability. The pastoral action of SLM is directly linked to the missionary action of the MSCS Sisters, according to where they find themselves. It is from their sharing in and of this gift of the Scalabrinian charism, that the SLM members are able to live their vocation with creativity: in their service to migrants, in their communion with their local churches and in their cooperation with the MSCS Congregation.
